[open] haunted woods

This wasn't what Castiel had expected. One moment he'd been standing beside Sam, and the next? Trees. It looked eerily familiar, which was to say that Castiel remembered the feeling of the place if not the forest itself. He'd become familiar with Purgatory, always fleeing from one spot to another, always keeping just ahead of the monsters and ahead of Dean, unwilling to be the cause of the man's death. It had been Castiel's fault, then. If he hadn't let the Leviathan free...
But that was a melancholy that was not worth revisiting. He was in no hurry to lose himself in the trees, to tether himself to his part in the responsibility of what they were facing and take all the blame for it. He had set Lucifer free, yes, but his decision hadn't been right or wrong, only necessary at the time. That Jack's existence had led to a tear opening between worlds was no mistake either, and what had happened thereafter was nobody's fault. Nobody's one choice was to blame. Jack's existence wasn't a mistake, and that--that had helped Castiel to find some peace with his own decisions, his own choices, and his own free will.
Now there was the question of this forest. He'd been in the middle of something, a tragedy playing out in slow motion--it was important he get back to it. But here, with only trees in every direction, a darkness and low fog hanging over the land, it would have been easy to let panic set in.
"Hello?" he called into the darkness, not really expecting a reply. "Is someone there?"
